Abstracts and presentations
First time at NERA or are you a returning participant? Are you familiar with our networks or do you want to know more and how to join one of them? Do you want more information regarding the different presentation types we have? Are you looking for information about how to write the abstract before the abstract submission opens? Have you been given the task of being chair at a parallell session? On this page you will find answers to all of the above!
Abstracts
A NERA proposal for presentation must be written (and held) in English. The proposal needs to be connected to one of the NERA networks.
The abstract should be 300-500 words including references and should include the following:
- Research topic/aim
- Theoretical framework
- Methodology/research design
- Expected results/findings
- Relevance to Nordic educational research
The presentation types are paper, poster, symposium, roundtable discussion and workshop.
Due to the number of participants and the schedule, it is only possible to present one paper or a poster as the first presenter.
You can participate as a co-author in multiple papers or posters, but it cannot be guaranteed that there is no overlap of the presenting program. In addition to presenting a paper or poster, it is possible to be a presenter in a symposium, a roundtable discussion or workshop.
The schedule will be set by the organising committee in collaboration with the network conveners. It will not be possible to consider requests for a specific presentation time or day.
Please note that you must be a member of NFPF/NERA for the year 2026 to be able to register for the conference, and you can register your membership through NERA at the NFPF/NERA website. Registration is not needed in the abstract submission stage.
The abstract submission for NERA 2027 is now open. Abstracts are submitted via the Oxford Abstracts platform and you will need to sign in or create an account to access the submission system.
The deadline for abstracts are set to November 3rd. 2026.
Guidelines for proposals
All abstracts for sessions must be submitted via the digital platform to the organizing committee of the conference before the announced deadline in second call for the conference.
Multiple-Paper Sessions
Paper sessions consist of multiple presentations and discussions of papers about ongoing or completed research projects. The time frame for each paper is 20 – 30 minutes including discussion and 3-4 different papers will be presented at each parallel session.
Abstracts should be 300-500 words and include:
1. Title of paper
2. Author(s) of proposal
3. Research topic/aim
4. Theoretical framework
5. Methodology/research design
6. Expected conclusions/expected outcomes
7. Relevance for Nordic Educational research
The author must select two networks possible for presentation, one primary and one secondary.
Multiple-Presenter Symposia
A symposium consists of papers focusing on a common theme to demonstrate a range of perspectives or a variety of approaches. The conference organizers decide how many symposia are feasible at the conference. The conference organizers also decide the time and place of symposia. The time frame of a symposium is 90 minutes and should consist of at least 3 and no more than 4 contributions.
A symposium is planned and proposed by a symposium organizer and has a chair (often the organizer) and a discussant who has read the different papers in advance. The symposium organizer prepares a detailed plan for the symposium and sends in the proposal including:
- The title of the symposium
- The name of the organizer
- The names of the contributors
- The name(s) of discussant(s)
- The addresses of the contributors’ institutions
- An abstract describing the purpose and rationale of the symposium (max. 500 words)
- Abstracts from the contributors (300-500 words) (see next section for details about content)
Roundtable Sessions
A roundtable session is a forum for the presentation and discussion of developmental work and research plans. Roundtable sessions are intended for focused discussions in small groups. A roundtable session is 90 minutes.
The organiser of the roundtable discussion should submit a roundtable proposal including the following elements:
1. The title of the roundtable discussion
2. The chair of the roundtable discussion
3. An abstract describing the entire roundtable (300-500 words). The abstract proposal must describe the focus and purpose of the session and ways in which participants will be engaged
Poster Sessions
Poster sessions offer a more informal opportunity to present a project visually rather than orally by means of a poster.
During poster sessions, conference participants can meet the poster presenters at the poster stations. The poster session is thereby a format maximizing interaction between participants and presenters. This requires that poster sessions are placed in an attractive location frequented by many participants at the conference venue.
The poster proposal should include the following elements:
1. The title of the poster
2. The researcher(s) responsible for the poster
3. An abstract describing the poster (300-500 words).
Workshops
Workshops are intended to be interactive and collaborative sessions that aim to provide participants with hands-on learning experiences, practical skills, and in-depth discussions on a specific topic/theme presented by researchers, practitioners, or policymakers. A workshop session is max. 90 minutes.
The workshop proposal should include the following elements:
1. The title of the workshop
2. The chair of the workshop
3. An abstract describing the workshop (300-500 words). The workshop proposal should include the purpose and the rationale of the session and a statement regarding audience involvement.
